When should you consider LCL?

LCL combines goods from multiple shippers in a shared container. It is worth comparing for smaller shipments that do not need a dedicated container. Consolidation before departure and separation at destination are part of the journey.

Compare the full cost and handling requirements with FCL, rather than choosing on cargo volume alone. For an urgent shipment, also discuss air freight. See Maersk’s explanation of FCL and LCL.

Send these details for a useful quote

  • Supplier’s city in China and Australian delivery postcode.
  • Goods description and number of cartons, pallets or crates.
  • Packed dimensions, gross weight and whether goods can be stacked.
  • Cargo-ready date and preferred delivery date.
  • Supplier’s shipping terms and any services already arranged.

Compare the complete journey cost

A sea freight price alone may not cover the journey from your supplier to your delivery address. Ask which of the following are included, excluded or dependent on the shipment:

At origin

Supplier collection, export handling and consolidation. Tell us what your supplier has already arranged so the quotation covers the remaining work.

At arrival

Destination handling, clearance coordination and any inspection, treatment or storage charges that may arise. Ask how additional charges would be confirmed.

At delivery

Transport to your postcode, receiving hours, vehicle access and unloading. Explain whether a forklift is available or other unloading arrangements are needed.

Use our freight quotation comparison checklist.

Before you book shared container freight

How do I work out cargo volume?

Multiply each package’s length × width × height in metres, then add the package volumes. For example, four cartons measuring 0.60 × 0.40 × 0.50 metres total 0.48 cubic metres. Supply gross weight too; volume alone does not determine the final freight charge.

How long will it take?

Ask for an estimated schedule covering collection, consolidation, ocean transport, destination handling and delivery. Cargo readiness, service availability and clearance affect timing. Confirm the schedule for your shipment before booking.

Can you coordinate goods from different suppliers?

Ask us about buyer’s consolidation. Send each supplier’s location, packing details and ready date so we can discuss collection and shipping arrangements together.

What if I only need part of the journey?

Tell us which services your supplier or another provider has arranged, and share the agreed shipping terms. We can discuss the freight, clearance, storage or delivery work you still need.
