Sea or air freight from China: how to compare your options

Compare FCL, LCL and air freight using cargo size, delivery needs, handling requirements and the complete transport cost.

By WSLogistics · Updated

Start with the delivery need, not just the freight rate

The right transport option depends on what must arrive, when it is needed and what happens if it is late. A replacement component needed to restart work presents a different decision from replenishment stock ordered well ahead of demand.

Give your forwarder a cargo-ready date and a required delivery date. Explain whether that deadline is fixed or flexible. Ask for the estimated journey to your delivery address, including handling and clearance, rather than comparing the flight or sailing time alone.

Compare the three main options

Air freight: assess urgency and cargo acceptance

Air transport generally offers a shorter main transit than ocean shipping. Ask whether the time saved justifies the complete delivery cost for your shipment. Confirm acceptance of the goods, package dimensions and any special handling before relying on an air option. See Maersk’s air freight overview.

LCL sea freight: shared container space

Less-than-container-load freight combines shipments in a shared container. Compare the complete quote and allow for consolidation at origin and separation at destination. Ask about receiving cut-offs and when your cargo is expected to become available for delivery.

FCL sea freight: a dedicated container

Full-container-load freight gives your shipment dedicated container space. You do not need to fill every cubic metre to request an FCL comparison. Check whether the cargo fits, how it will be loaded and unloaded, and how container collection and return will be handled.

Discuss your shipment through our China to Australia air freight service or full container FCL shipping service. Each page explains the cargo details, handling and quotation scope to prepare.

There is no single cargo-volume threshold that makes FCL the best choice for every shipment. Route pricing, handling and destination charges matter too. For background, see Maersk’s explanation of FCL and LCL.

Compare equivalent service scopes

  • Same cargo: use final packed dimensions, gross weight and package count in each request.
  • Same endpoints: compare factory-to-address with factory-to-address, or clearly identify missing legs.
  • Same inclusions: check collection, handling, clearance coordination and delivery.
  • Same assumptions: identify exclusions, quote validity and costs that depend on inspections or delays.
  • Realistic availability: confirm whether the proposed service can accept the cargo on the planned date.

Our quotation checklist helps you compare the scope behind each price. For a shared container shipment, explore our China to Australia LCL shipping service and enquiry checklist.

Could a split shipment solve the problem?

As a planning example, an importer may need a small quantity for an upcoming launch while the rest of an order can arrive later. Ask for a comparison between one shipment and an urgent portion by air with the balance by sea.

Splitting an order can add separate handling, documentation and minimum charges. It is an option to assess, not an automatic saving. Tell us exactly which items are urgent and whether the supplier can pack them separately.
